Back in 1998 Toni Braxton agreed to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show to tell her side of the story about how someone so rich and successful could end up filing for bankruptcy. What she said she got was someone dead set on embarrassing and demeaning her for ratings.
Since then Braxton had to file for bankruptcy a second time in 2010 and now she is starting to point the finger right at Oprah.
Speaking on VH1′s “Behind the Music” which aired yesterday she said:
“She was so freakin’ mean to me. I was in shock!”
“She says to me, ‘I heard you have Gucci flatware. I’m Oprah Winfrey and even I don’t have Gucci flatware. You don’t have Gucci flatware because you didn’t want to buy it, not because you couldn’t afford it! What do you mean?”
“She made me feel this big (squeezing her thumb and forefinger together). That moment completely changed my career. It made people look down on me.”
With some bad timing while the show was about to air, TMZ reported that Braxton is being accused by the trustee of her bankruptcy case of fraudulently transferring $53,490 to her husband in order to avoid paying back creditors.
Her reps denied that claim:
“All of the payments made to Lewis prior to Toni’s bankruptcy filing were appropriate transfers for reasonable and necessary personal and business expenses in the ordinary course of her business.”
What do you think, did Oprah have a hand in ruining her career?
