“This is probably one of my all time lows of being President in 11 years. For the first time in 11 years, we’re going to cancel an event.”
Those words were said by a very angry UFC president Dana White earlier today during a conference call about the status of UFC 151. Jon Jones was slated to fight dangerous Dan Henderson until “Hendo” had to pull out last night due to a partial tear on his MCL.
Dana White and the UFC marketing team worked all night to find a replacement and go the response he wanted from Chael Sonnen. Not only did Sonnen want the fight on just 8 days notice he said he would fight that very night.
So everything was good again and they could work on new promo’s and TV spots until the unthinkable happened…Jon Jones turned down the fight. Apparently it was on the advice of his head trainer Greg Jackson who thought it wouldn’t be a good idea to take a Chael Sonnen fight on days notice.
During the conference call Dana White took a lot of shots at Jon Jones and head trainer Greg Jackson.
“Good for you, Jon Jones, you’re rich and you don’t have to take this fight but what about the guys on the undercard? This is how they feed their families. They need this.”
“I can tell you this right now, he ain’t turning down the Machida fight. If I get a call today that he’s turning down the fight, we’ll have another conference call.”
(About Greg Jackson)
“This guy is a fucking sport killer…I don’t give a shit what Greg Jackson thinks. The guy is a fucking weirdo, man. Greg Jackson should not be interviewed by anybody ever again except by a psychiatrist.”
So what happens now?
Jon Jones will now face Lyoto Machida as the main event of UFC 152 on September 22nd.
The backlash from both fans and fighters have already lit up Twitter and MMA comment boards. Here are some of the most harsh remarks about Jon Jones turning down the fight.
